Mountain biking is a sport that can involve some speed; especially while on a downhill descent. Often we reach for the brakes slowing into those turns, and sometimes we find ourselves falling over, or just biffing it. Why does this happen? Lack of speed. Getting out of our comfort zone can be no fun, fearful, yet exhilarating. Here are a few tips to use speed as your friend, to help push your personal envelope and become a more confident rider.
Ride a downhill section you have ridden before and note where you apply the brakes into that coming corner. The next time, wait a few second longer. Remember, speed is your friend. The wheels act as a gyroscope and want to stay upright. The faster those wheels spin the more rigid they become. The only way to accomplish this effect is with speed. Start this new maneuver gradually, and practice, practice, practice. Soon you will be taking those corners leaving friends in awe.
Hold on to those handle bars! We all put a finger or two on each brake lever, right? Well, instead of placing your fingers on the lever, wrap all five around the bars. This will also give you a more secure grip. I know, this can be intimidating, but trust me, when it comes time to brake you will know where the lever is located. Don’t forget to keep that head up and look down the trail.
Going faster is not something I recommend doing overnight. Ease into the feeling and gradually enhance those skills. Before you know it, you will be mountain biking faster and ready for any trail.
The TMG Crew
It’s over a month earlier than last mountain bike season, and conditions couldn’t be better! TMG has been out riding the trails you all love (those that haven’t visited WILL LOVE!) and we couldn’t be happier. Night time temps are cooperating and keeping the trails tacky, dust-free and fast. In the upper elevation we still have some snow, but don’t worry, with day time temps reaching the 70’s, snow won’t be lasting long. So, with all this good news, it’s time to hit the trails! Tahoe Mountain Guides has some exciting new things going on for this summer tour season.
Tahoe Mountain Guides has moved! That’s right, we found a home with our good friends, Truckee Sports Exchange, and guess who came with us…that’s right, Cycle Paths is under the same roof, too! We are all excited for our new home and ready to serve. Now you can get your mountain bikes, accessories, mountain bike guides, rock climbing and stand up paddle boarding all in one location! Come say hi at 10095 West River St. Truckee, Ca. 96161
New this season, Tahoe Mountain Guides will be offering Historic Truckee Legacy Trail tours. The Legacy Trail tour is great for families of all ages with views of the Truckee River, with interest boards along the way telling of Truckee’s historic past. Enjoy the Legacy Trail on a multi-speed townie comfort bike riding an easy 2.3 miles or 7 mile tour depending on your time. For more details visit TMG’s bike tour page.

See YOU on the trails!
I hear some mountain bikers say they have not been on the bike enough this summer. What’s wrong with the fall? You should be on the local trails now! The mountain bike season has not ended and the trails are in the best shape ever! The fall season in Tahoe and Truckee brings new wonder; it brings incredible colors leaping from the mountain bike trails, and the dirt you ride with those knobby tires sticking to the trails enabling you to ride faster than ever. Are you starting think, “why am I not on my mountain bike!?” Yeah, Tahoe Mountain Guides want you on the trail, too!
Tahoe Mountain Guides have been getting after the trails all season long. We know the trails, we know the conditions, and we know what you will like. Each mountain bike tour is fit to your ability level, and special care is taken to ensure your safe arrival with a smile. Fall in Lake Tahoe also has some of the best biking weather. Temperatures range in the mid to upper 60’s. Make sure to bring a fleece if we ride into the sunset. For more information or to book a mountain bike tour, don’t wait too long. As soon as the snow falls, TMG will be off the bikes and strapped to our alpine and telemark skis.
First, Tahoe Mountain Guides would like to thank Lake Tahoe’s All-Women Sport Camp for the opportunity to participate and to share in such an amazing event. And, we got to mountain bike with Marla Streb! World class mountain biker right here in our own backyard! Also, a huge “Thank You” to ALL the ladies who participated. Tahoe Mountain Guides enjoyed getting dirty with you, and cleaning up a couple of you while breaking that learning curve. We hope you had as much fun as we did, and hope to see you at the camp next summer!
The tours are flowing like the singletrack we love to ride. And on the singletrack, we have taken many riders from many walks of life from all over the world. TMG’s guests have come from: Canada, Germany, Israel, South Korea, and East Coast Represent!…as well as from the streets we walk in the Truckee/Tahoe area. Each and every day, our guides at TMG look forward to meeting new guests and expanding our experience beyond our mountain get-away town. TMG has converted casual riders, and newbie’s, to mountain bikers!
The long and short of it, Tahoe Mountain Guides is having some fun and it’s because of YOU! If you have yet to experience a tour with TMG, give us a call, send us an email, or show up at the shop. Bike tours are always available, and fit to your ability level. We want to hear your story and make many more mountain bike friends.
Finally I get to sit down and write a little something about all of our friends we have taken out on the mountain bike trail. The riding has been epic, our tours have been outstanding and the friends we have made are just the best people you could ever meet. They come from all over; Georgia, Canada, New York, locally and beyond! And the best part, most of our tours are introductory rides with guests never sitting on a full-suspension bike let alone hitting a singletrack trail; and now they share the excitement and passion Tahoe Mountain Guides has for the sport of mountain biking. Take a look at what we do:
